How to Solve Connections and Spot Traps

Look for a rule that fits exactly four words
Read the whole board before guessing. A broad theme like food can fit too many words. Try a specific rule like citrus fruits, then check that every candidate follows it. If you find five candidates, see whether one has a second meaning that connects to another group.
Test the word that does double duty
BASS can be a fish or a musical instrument. If the board also has TROUT, SALMON and COD, test whether you can form a complete group of instruments without BASS. Comparing both possible groups is more reliable than committing to the first association.
Use one away to narrow the search
The message says three words are right together. It leaves open which three. Keep the strongest shared rule and swap the weakest candidate first. If the new guess fails, reread the group before trying another swap.
Try a practice group
TRIANGLE, SQUARE and CIRCLE belong to the same group. Which of these two words follows the more specific rule?
